Wheels Across a Wilderness 60th Anniversary Expedition

In just two weeks from today we will embark on the biggest trip I have ever done. The recreacation of Wheels Across a Wilderness, 60th Anniversary Expedition

I may have spent 4 years travelling Australia in my 20s when we were filming Leyland’s Australia, but this trip is different. This trip is about forming new memories with my dad, recreating his biggest adventure that he achieved and ticking off one on my bucket list items.

Dad has talked a lot about his adventure back in 1966 when they filmed Wheel Across a Wilderness. The trials and tribulations that they went through, the endless breakdowns that they had to overcome. I am so grateful that I will be undertaking the trip in 2026 with the reliability and comfort that comes with modern vehicles.

In fact, until a few weeks ago we were not even sure what vehicle we would be doing the trip in as neither I nor my husband own a 4WD at the moment. So, I have to say a big thank you to ARB for coming on board as a sponsor and providing us with the vehicle to complete the journey. We finally receive the car next week and can then start working out how to pack it.

We have filming gear to fit in along with the camping gear. It’s been a while since I’ve been away camping as I had a caravan for my adventures until about 12 months ago.

My dad’s dementia is impacting his life more and more so this trip will be great for him to relive some good memories. I believe it will be good more his mental health. Doing what he loves again. Travelling and photographing Australia.

We set off from Cairns to make our way south to Adelaide, across the Nullabor to Perth then up to Denham which is where our trip will start. Then we’ll begin heading west from Steep Point on May 4th, through to Uluru, up to Alice then hopefully across the Simpson Desert (hopefully the flood waters will have cleared by the time we get there). We will then continue our journey to complete the expedition to watch the Sunrise at Cape Byron on May 28th.

    1. Hi Lynne,

Thanks for the suggestions, a T-Shirt with a large logo on the back will retail for around $75 as it costs so much for the print.

      Regards
