Katherine Gorge tour environments will forever hold a sacred place in my memories because of how deeply they impacted me when I was in my twenties. I absolutely loved my very first visit there. If I sit back and really think about it, that single trip was what truly instilled my great, lifelong passion for the Australian outback.
At the time, we were traveling and filming for our national television series, Leyland’s Australia. We had the incredible opportunity to take a classic commercial boat tour down the river. I still vividly remember the local guide who took us on the water safari; his deep knowledge and raw passion for the landscape were completely contagious.
That night, I remember lying in bed beneath the stars thinking, “That is exactly what I want to do. I want to come back here to the gorge one day and work as an authentic tour guide, just like him.”
How Life Reframed the Dream
Of course, I didn’t get back there right away. Life has a beautiful way of getting in the way. We filmed our television series for a few more years, I got pregnant with my son Rex, and then my twin girls came along. My former partner and I frequently talked about purchasing a large bus to live, work, and travel around Australia together while the kids were still young.
We actually got as far with that plan as purchasing the physical bus and stripping out a few passenger seats to start the custom motorhome renovation. Then, we separated, went through a divorce, and my life focused entirely on raising my three wonderful children as a single mother.
Stepping Back Into the Guiding Arena
Fast forward in time, and my children are now grown up at 24 and 21. A few years ago, I successfully stepped back into the travel arena, working out in Winton as an accredited tour guide at the world-class Australian Age of Dinosaurs museum. I absolutely treasured my time at the museum, talking all day about an exciting, historical subject to enthusiastic travellers who genuinely wanted to hear what I had to say.
Now that August 2026 is here, I am still incredibly passionate about Australia, writing, researching, and guiding. I am finally returning to Nitmiluk!
