Our journey commenced on May 1st in Denham, Western Australia, and concluded as planned after 28 days at Cape Byron, New South Wales in celebration of Wheels Across a Wilderness 60th Anniversay. The trip was the result of eight months of meticulous planning, ultimately spanning six and a half weeks from departure to return. Along the way, we achieved significant milestones and established lasting relationships. Weather conditions required us to make several last-minute travel adjustments, and mechanical failures were encountered. Most notably, my father, Mal Leyland, had the opportunity to revisit the outback and regions he holds dear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When planning this expedition, my intention was to provide a positive experience for my father amid his dementia. The results exceeded expectations, bringing noticeable improvement to his wellbeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since our return two days ago, I have resolved to continue engaging my father in regular outings, focusing initially on destinations accessible from Cairns and northern Queensland. These excursions will be documented and shared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, preparations are underway for the inaugural edition of “Leyland\u2019s Travel Australia” magazine, titled “Red Dirt Adventures.” This monthly publication will feature travel stories, recommendations on destinations and activities, driving itineraries, and profiles of individuals we encounter throughout our journeys. Updates regarding the release of the first edition will be provided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
