G’day, I’m Carmen Leyland, and I’d love you to join me on this very special Queensland Dinosaur Trail adventure.
Growing up in the Leyland family, travelling Australia wasn’t something we saved for holidays. It was part of everyday life.
Now I’d love to share some of that magic with you.
We’re heading into the heart of Queensland’s Dinosaur Country, travelling through Winton, Hughenden, Richmond and Longreach with a small group of just ten guests.
And I’ve put together an adventure that offers much more than simply visiting the attractions.

Dinosaurs, Fossils and a Sky Full of Stars
One of the things I love most about Queensland’s Dinosaur Trail is that every destination has a completely different story to tell. From enormous dinosaurs to ancient marine reptiles, it’s like travelling through millions of years of Australian history.
We’ll discover Australia’s incredible prehistoric past at the Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum, walk in the footsteps of dinosaurs at Lark Quarry and explore the fascinating marine fossils of Richmond.
We’ll meet Hughie the Muttaburrasaurus in Hughenden, discover the stories behind Waltzing Matilda and experience the wonder of the Outback night sky during a planned astronomy experience.
And one morning, we’ll be up early for something rather special — breakfast together at Porcupine Gorge, surrounded by some of Queensland’s most spectacular scenery.
There’ll be time for photographs, a few laughs and those wonderful little moments that often become the best memories of a holiday.
And on our way to Richmond? We’ll stop in Hughenden for a proper country bakery pie!

There’s More to the Outback Than Dinosaurs
Our journey also takes us to Longreach, where we’ll discover the remarkable story of Qantas, explore Australia’s pioneering heritage and experience the magic of the Outback after dark.
We’re planning a special Thomson River farewell experience to celebrate our adventure together.
Then, instead of rushing home, we’ll climb aboard the iconic Spirit of the Outback for an overnight railway journey to Brisbane in reserved Twin Sleeper accommodation.
What a wonderful way to finish ten days of exploring!

Small Group, Big Adventure
Travelling Queensland’s Dinosaur Trail with just ten guests means we can enjoy a more personal experience, with time to explore, take photographs and appreciate the wonderful places we visit.
I’ll be travelling with you, sharing the experience, discovering new things alongside you and making sure there’s plenty of time to enjoy the journey rather than simply racing from one attraction to the next.
We’ll travel through extraordinary landscapes, meet interesting people, support local communities and enjoy some genuine country hospitality along the way.
Because sometimes the best part of travelling isn’t just where you go.
It’s the people you meet, the stories you hear and the memories you bring home.

Queensland’s Dinosaur Trail is more than a journey through prehistoric Australia. It’s an opportunity to discover the characters, landscapes and stories that make the Queensland Outback unforgettable.

Discover Australia’s Prehistoric Outback
Queensland’s Dinosaur Trail isn’t a theme park.
It’s a journey through real fossil country – places where some of Australia’s most important dinosaur and marine fossil discoveries were made
Why is Queensland’s Dinosaur Trail limited to only 10 people?
By travelling with a maximum of 10 guests, we can experience these extraordinary Outback communities at a relaxed pace while combining prehistoric Australia with the stories, landscapes and people of modern Outback Queensland.

Your 10-Day Queensland Dinosaur Trail Adventure
Join Carmen Leyland on an unforgettable 10-day journey through Queensland's Dinosaur Country and the heart of the Australian Outback.
From ancient dinosaur footprints and remarkable fossil discoveries to spectacular landscapes, pioneering stories and the birthplace of Qantas, each day brings something different.
Our adventure begins with a flight from Brisbane to Longreach and concludes with an overnight journey aboard the iconic Spirit of the Outback.
Explore our day-by-day itinerary below to discover what's waiting for you from 18–27 April 2027.
Our adventure begins at Brisbane Airport, where our group comes together for our included flight to Longreach.
After arriving in the heart of Queensland’s Outback, you’ll be met at Longreach Airport and transferred to our accommodation.
We’ve deliberately kept our first afternoon relaxed. There’ll be time to settle in, explore a little of Longreach or simply enjoy the change of pace.
Tonight we’ll come together for our Welcome Dinner, meet our fellow travellers and look ahead to the adventure to come.
Overnight: Longreach
Included: Economy flight Brisbane to Longreach, airport transfer and Welcome Dinner.
After breakfast, we farewell Longreach and begin our journey towards Winton, the heart of Queensland’s Dinosaur Country.
Before reaching Winton, we’ll make our way to the spectacular Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum of Natural History, perched high above the surrounding plains on a mesa known as The Jump-Up.
Our experience is planned to include the museum’s comprehensive Ultimate Dinosaur Tour, taking us behind the scenes of Australia’s remarkable prehistoric past.
We’ll explore the fossil preparation laboratory, collection room, March of the Titanosaurs exhibition and Dinosaur Canyon, discovering how scientists continue to uncover and study dinosaur fossils millions of years old.
After our museum experience, we’ll continue into Winton, where we’ll check into our accommodation and enjoy some time to relax.
Deep-Time Astronomy – Gondwana Stars Observatory
This evening, we’ll return to The Jump-Up for a completely different experience.
At the Gondwana Stars Observatory, we’ll turn our attention from the prehistoric world beneath our feet to the extraordinary universe above us.
Far from the bright lights of Australia’s major cities, we’ll enjoy the approximately 1½-hour Deep-Time Astronomy Tour, discovering the stars, planets and wonders of the night sky.
It’s a wonderful introduction to Dinosaur Country and a memorable way to spend our first evening in Winton.
Overnight: Winton
Included: Breakfast, Australian Age of Dinosaurs Ultimate Dinosaur Tour and Deep-Time Astronomy Tour.
Please note: The astronomy experience is subject to weather conditions and the museum’s confirmed 2027 operating schedule.
Leaving Winton behind, we travel deeper into Queensland’s Dinosaur Country towards the historic Outback town of Hughenden.
Our destination is the Flinders Discovery Centre, another of the four major experiences making up Australia’s Dinosaur Trail.
Here we’ll meet the enormous life-size Muttaburrasaurus replica affectionately known as Hughie, one of the centre’s most recognisable attractions.
We’ll discover fascinating fossils and geological treasures that tell the story of this region’s prehistoric past, including the remarkable creatures that once roamed this ancient landscape.
Depending on timing and conditions, we’ll also explore some of Hughenden’s local sights and may head to Mount Walker to enjoy sweeping views across the surrounding Outback countryside.
After a day of discovery, we’ll settle into our Hughenden accommodation for the evening.
Overnight: Hughenden
Included: Breakfast, Flinders Discovery Centre admission and hosted touring.
It’s an early start this morning, but we’ve got something special planned!
Sunrise Breakfast at Porcupine Gorge
We’ll head north from Hughenden towards magnificent Porcupine Gorge National Park, arriving in the beautiful early-morning light.
Often described as Queensland’s Little Grand Canyon, Porcupine Gorge reveals spectacular layers of ancient sandstone carved by Porcupine Creek over millions of years.
Rather than rushing through, we’ll take our time to appreciate this remarkable landscape.
I’ll be bringing along specially prepared breakfast packs for everyone, so we can enjoy a relaxed Outback breakfast surrounded by the natural beauty of Porcupine Gorge.
There’s something wonderful about starting the day outdoors, enjoying breakfast together and taking in the colours of the ancient gorge as the morning light changes.
We’ll have time to admire the views, take photographs and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
Our visit will focus on the designated lookout and picnic areas, without requiring guests to undertake the strenuous walk to the gorge floor.
A Country Bakery Lunch in Hughenden
After our morning at Porcupine Gorge, we’ll make our way back to Hughenden for another little Outback treat.
We’ll stop at a local bakery, where there’s nothing quite like a freshly baked country pie for lunch!
It’s a chance to enjoy a relaxed lunch, support a local business and experience a little more of everyday life in an Outback Queensland town.
Onwards to Richmond
After lunch, we’ll continue east towards Richmond, travelling through the wide-open landscapes of Queensland’s Dinosaur Country.
This afternoon is deliberately relaxed following our early start.
There’ll be time to settle into our accommodation and enjoy the peaceful surroundings of Lake Fred Tritton and the historic township of Richmond.
Overnight: Richmond
Included: Breakfast pack at Porcupine Gorge, hosted morning sightseeing and bakery pie lunch in Hughenden.
Today’s prehistoric story is completely different.
Millions of years ago, much of inland Queensland was covered by a vast inland sea, inhabited by enormous marine reptiles.
Kronosaurus Korner – Richmond
At Kronosaurus Korner, we’ll discover Australia’s premier collection of marine fossils and meet some of the incredible creatures that once inhabited this ancient ocean.
Among the collection is Penny, one of Australia’s most complete marine vertebrate specimens.
We’ll explore the fascinating exhibits and discover how Richmond became one of Australia’s most important locations for prehistoric marine fossil discoveries.
Fossil Finding Experience
We’re also planning to incorporate a hands-on fossil experience, giving our guests the opportunity to learn how to search for and identify fossils in the Richmond region.
It’s a wonderful opportunity to experience the excitement of discovering evidence of creatures that lived millions of years ago.
Following our Richmond experience, we’ll turn west again and travel through Hughenden towards Winton.
Tonight we’ll return to Winton for one final night before continuing our adventure to Longreach tomorrow.
Overnight: Winton
Included: Breakfast, Kronosaurus Korner admission and planned fossil-finding experience.
Please note: The fossil-finding experience is subject to supplier availability and confirmation of the 2027 program.
After breakfast, we farewell Winton and make our way back to Longreach, where our adventure takes us from prehistoric Queensland into the fascinating world of Australian aviation.
Qantas Founders Museum
Our first major experience is the Qantas Founders Museum, where we’ll discover the remarkable story of one of Australia’s most iconic airlines.
From its humble beginnings in Outback Queensland to becoming an internationally recognised name, Qantas has a fascinating history of adventure, innovation and determination.
We’ll explore the museum’s aviation exhibits and discover the people and pioneering spirit behind the airline’s extraordinary journey.
Our visit is also planned to include a guided aircraft experience, taking us beyond general museum admission and providing an opportunity to get up close to the museum’s historic aircraft collection.
After our daytime experience, we’ll return to our accommodation, with some time to relax before tonight’s special event.
Luminescent Longreach – An Evening of Light and Sound
After dark, we’ll return to the Qantas Founders Museum for Luminescent Longreach, one of the town’s most memorable evening experiences.
Using spectacular projections, music and sound, the story of Qantas comes to life across the Boeing 747, Boeing 707 and Super Constellation beneath the museum’s Airpark roof.
It’s a wonderful way to finish our aviation day and experience another side of Longreach after sunset.
Overnight: Longreach
Included: Breakfast, Qantas Founders Museum admission, planned guided aircraft experience and Luminescent Longreach evening light-and-sound experience.
Please note: Experiences are subject to supplier confirmation and the final 2027 operating schedule.
Today is our final full day exploring the Queensland Outback, and we’re spending it discovering the remarkable people and stories that have shaped this extraordinary part of Australia.
ANZAC Day in Longreach
As today is ANZAC Day, guests who wish to do so may have the opportunity to attend a local commemorative service, subject to the confirmed 2027 Longreach program.
It’s a meaningful occasion to reflect on Australia’s history and the contributions of those who have served.
Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame
Our day is planned to include a visit to the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame & Outback Heritage Centre, one of Longreach’s most celebrated attractions.
Here we’ll discover the stories of the pioneers, pastoralists, stockmen and First Nations people whose lives and experiences have helped shape regional Australia.
Through fascinating exhibits and displays, we’ll gain a deeper appreciation of the challenges, resilience and traditions of life in the Australian Outback.
Thomson River – Our Outback Farewell
Later, we’ll come together for a special farewell experience planned around the beautiful Thomson River.
We’re hoping to enjoy an evening river cruise and an Outback dinner and show experience, taking in the atmosphere of Longreach as the sun sets over the landscape.
After days filled with dinosaurs, fossils, ancient landscapes, aviation history and unforgettable Outback characters, it’s a fitting way to celebrate our adventure together.
Tomorrow, we’ll board the iconic Spirit of the Outback for our overnight rail journey to Brisbane.
Overnight: Longreach
Included: Breakfast and planned Longreach touring and farewell experience.
Please note: ANZAC Day services, the Stockman’s Hall of Fame visit and Thomson River experiences are subject to supplier availability and confirmed 2027 operating schedules. Final arrangements will be advised before departure.
After breakfast, it’s time to say goodbye to Longreach – but our adventure isn’t quite over.
Today, we’ll transfer to Longreach Railway Station and board Queensland Rail’s iconic Spirit of the Outback for our overnight journey to Brisbane.
Rather than spending a couple of hours flying home, we’re going to slow things down and experience the changing Queensland landscape from the comfort of the train.
An Overnight Outback Rail Adventure
Our guests will travel in Twin Sleeper accommodation, with the overnight rail journey included as part of the tour.
Settle into your cabin, watch the vast Outback scenery roll past your window and enjoy the relaxed pace of rail travel.
As the train makes its way east, we’ll experience another side of Queensland, passing through changing landscapes, country towns and the wide-open spaces that make this journey so memorable.
It’s a wonderful opportunity to relax, reflect on our adventures and enjoy the company of fellow travellers as we make our way towards Brisbane.
Tonight we’ll fall asleep aboard the train, bringing our Queensland Dinosaur Trail adventure towards its final destination.

And what better way to finish than aboard one of Queensland’s most iconic train journeys?
Arriving in Brisbane
We’ll arrive at Brisbane Roma Street Station, where our Queensland Dinosaur Trail & Outback Legends adventure comes to an end.
After ten days of exploring together, it’s time to say our farewells and head home with wonderful memories, new friendships and plenty of stories to share.
Thank you for joining me on this adventure through Queensland’s remarkable Dinosaur Country. I hope it’s been every bit as memorable for you as it has been for me.
